Founded by Doug Scott in 1994, Community Action Nepal aims to improve standards of living in remote Himalayan communities and give something back to the mountain people who helped him achieve his goals on his many expeditions.
CAN has established more than 50 community projects
CAN operates within a number of key sectors and has evolved from supporting porter welfare through the provision of rescue shelters, to building and running schools and health posts.
In recent years, CAN has developed a mature health service, from the construction of the health posts through to running the facilities, including the provision of trained nurses and the supply of medicine and equipment. CAN has also supported numerous livelihood projects, including the growing and selling of vegetables, and the rearing of animals for sustainable and varied nutrition and income generation.

50 years since Everest the Hard Way
In 1975, the British Everest Expedition broke new ground to the summit, climbing the vast South West Face. It was the first time any of Everest’s faces had been climbed, a defining moment in mountaineering history and a milestone for Mountain Equipment.
Doug Scott and Dougal Haston were the first pair to climb the mountain via this route. This experience, along with all their other expeditions to Nepal, guided Doug to found Community Action Nepal later in his life.
September 2025 marks 50 years since Everest the Hard Way. We’ll be celebrating the legacy of that climb and the Mountain Equipment gear that made it possible.
