Mountain Equipment has been a leader in the design and innovation of mountaineering clothing and equipment for over 60 years. Starting from humble beginnings—drying down in a stove and hand-stuffing sleeping bags in a chicken shed—we have evolved to equip expeditions to the highest summits and both Poles.
Throughout these six decades of innovation, we have continuously sought out the latest fabric and construction technologies while also developing our own in-house solutions. We were one of the first brands in the UK to use GORE-TEX in the 1970s, and in 2024, we introduced our groundbreaking Aetherm synthetic insulation.
We have pushed the boundaries of what is possible in both down and synthetic insulation, producing some of the finest cold-weather clothing and equipment in the world. Our work is guided by the experiences of the cutting-edge mountaineers we support, as well as the expertise of our highly skilled design and development team, which drives our product innovation.
Stay Warm. Stay Protected | Insulation
Mountain Equipment's very first products were down-insulated sleeping bags and 'duvet' jackets, which remain central to our brand today. We have been leaders in animal welfare standards, creating the DOWN CODEX® in 2009 and partnering with RDS® more recently to enhance the welfare standards in our down supply chain even further.
In addition to down insulation, we have a long history of producing synthetic clothing and sleeping bags, utilizing the latest fabric technology. Our iconic Fitzroy Jacket was introduced in the early 1970s. Today, we employ a variety of synthetic fills, each selected for specific applications and user requirements. From pioneering synthetic belay jackets in the 1970s to developing our own state-of-the-art synthetic insulation, we have consistently been at the forefront of creating clothing designed to keep you warm in the worst conditions possible.
Stay Dry. Stay Protected. | Waterproofs
Mountain Equipment is a GORE-TEX Brand development partner, collaborating on the creation of every new GORE-TEX fabric for decades. From our very first GORE-TEX jacket in 1976 to the introduction of PRO in the early 2010s, and now the launch of next-gen ePE membrane, we have consistently utilised the best fabrics available in our waterproof products.
In addition to GORE-TEX, we have also developed our own DRILITE® range, which includes both highly weatherproof and fully waterproof fabrics. This range has been a key feature of our products for over 30 years, offering reliable waterproof protection and packability.
