Protecting Glenridding Common | John Muir Trust

The John Muir Trust has taken on the management of Glenridding Common in the English Lake District, their aim is to strengthen the wild character of the area and give nature a chance to flourish.

The Trust are working with the local community and interested parties to protect and enhance the ecosystem while respecting its cultural traditions, including farming practices, and working within the pressures of large visitor numbers to Helvellyn and the surrounding fells.

As well as a range of arctic-alpine plants, Glenridding Common also holds significant stands of juniper scrub woodland, plus a variety of montane and upland heath, grassland and flush communities. Red Tarn holds a population of Schelly, one of England’s rarest species of fish and England’s highest population of stickleback.

Bird life is also rich, with snow bunting found on the high tops in winter, while upland species such as raven, wheatear and ring ouzel all breed here in the summer.

Alison Austin is the Property Manager for Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain and a renowned climbing venue. People travel from around the world to sample adventurous ice routes during the winter months, and explore the rugged terrain when summer finally arrives.

Mountain Equipment is a corporate member of the John Muir Trust supporting the charity in a number of ways. This includes equipping its land staff with clothing and equipment, a vital resource for those involved in year round conservation work in some of our wildest and most precious landscapes.
